US-based Walmart Labs acquihired a Bengaluru-based deeptech startup, Dataturks to use the machine learning capabilities of the startup founded in 2018 by former Flipkart employees.

Mohan Gupta and Gajendra Dadheech, Dataturks was among the 19 startups selected for Axilor Ventures’ Summer Cohort 2018. Having partnered with more than 1000 enterprises across the globe, Dataturks’ employees will help Walmart in using machine learning in order to improve its content. The startup will provide its services in leveraging the Natural Language Processing technology to improve image bounding, document, and text annotation, according to media reports.

This “acquihire” of Dataturks essentially means that Walmart Labs wanted to tap into the talent that Dataturks had to offer in the form of its founders and primary employees. About 35 US-based clients in the health-tech and legal sector have been using Dataturks’ services.

Walmart acquired about 76 percent of Flipkart and is conducting several acquihires such as Dataturks. Walmart aims to hire about 1000 people in India in 2019. The company aims to increase its team size and get talent that is skilled in data science, product management, and design.
