Facebook to employ about 3,000 employees in London by the end of 2019

The social media giant has announced that it will create 500 new tech jobs in London by the end of 2019 and employ more than 3,000 people in the capital by the end of the year across three sites.

Out of the 500 new tech jobs, 100 will be roles in artificial intelligence, with many working on systems to detect and remove malicious content, fake accounts and harmful behavior.

“These hundreds of new jobs demonstrate not only our commitment to the UK but also our determination to proactively detect and remove malicious content,” shared Nicola Mendelsohn, Facebook’s Vice President for Europe, Middle East and Africa.

With safety being top priority for Facebook, the social media company has been working on this aspect quite some time now. Mendelsohn reveals that they have substantially increased investment in this area over the last two years.

The new hires will have a critical responsibility of keeping Facebook safe and secure. Their role will be important as Facebook frequently battles bad actors and brand safety crises. As per a report, in March it had to remove over 1.5m videos of New Zealand's Christchurch attacks within 24 hours, which led to Facebook updating some features after facing pressure from advertisers.

Further, Mendelsohn shares that the hiring plan for London not only demonstrates the determination to keep Facebook safe and secure but also their commitment to the UK.

Facebook said London was its biggest engineering centre outside the United States. How the social media giant strengthens its teams in the city and builds a safe and secure facebook with the help of tech talent in London are a few things to look forward to.
