Layoffs hit McDonald's: CEO Chris Kempczinsk confirms job cuts coming in April 2023

The CEO of McDonald’s Chris Kempczinski announced that the company is planning to cut some of its corporate staff. He released a memo to employees saying that the step is taken to ‘reduce global costs.’ 

“We will evaluate roles and staffing levels in parts of the organisation and there will be difficult discussions and decisions ahead,” Kempszinski said, according to CNN. 

“Certain initiatives will be de-prioritised or stopped altogether. This will help us move faster as an organisation while reducing our global costs and freeing up resources to invest in our growth,” he added.  

While the fast-food chain flourished during the pandemic with an increase in sales, the recent inflation sent restaurant-goers looking for cheaper options. Hence, the company is planning to reduce work that doesn’t align with its priorities anymore.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, CEO Kempszinski stated that the company has to become faster, more innovative and more efficient, which means layoffs. 

“Some jobs that are existing today are either going to get moved or those jobs may go away,” Kempczinski said.

McDonald’s is likely to communicate its future staffing plans by April 3. The company had around 200,000 corporate staff and workers at company-owned restaurants at the end of 2021, according to its latest annual report.
