Generative AI and its impact on HR landscape

Generative AI represents a significant shift in HR Tech. It's not just a tool; it's an innovative approach, offering tailored solutions that meet specific enterprise needs. Starting from resume screening, candidate matching, and interview assistance, to employee onboarding and engagement, performance management, and fostering DEIB, generative AI has redefined aspects of HR and the employee experience, leading to heightened engagement, satisfaction, and productivity in the workplace.

In a panel discussion on shaping the future of HR with generative AI, during People Matters TechHR Pulse Indonesia in Jakarta, industry experts shared insights on the role of generative AI in HR operations. The panel included Anton Hendrianto; Head of Human Capital Strategy & Development; Bank Muamalat, Indrijati Rahayoe; Chief Human Resources & Community Investment Officer; Prudential Syariah, and Rudy Manik, CHRO & Marketing, FWD Insurance. The session was moderated by Randeep Singh, co-founder & COO, HONO.ai.

The session explored how this innovative approach, propelled by advancements like ChatGPT, is reshaping the landscape of human resources—from boosting productivity and creativity to fostering disciplined innovation. Join us as we unravel the game-changing insights shared by these leaders, revealing the dynamic intersection of technology and human-centricity in shaping the future of HR.

The industry leaders shared their take on how generative Ai is implemented in their organisations, forging a future where technology and human-centricity meet.

“Generative AI has been in place for many years. Thanks to ChatGPT, which gave phenomenal exposure to everyone to Generative AI … It is something that changed the game of how we look at artificial intelligence,”  Randeep said.

The power of a good prompt

Overall, Generative AI in the form of ChatGPT is an offshoot of machine learning, which is capable of picking up on conversation patterns through prompts. So, how exactly is generative AI reshaping work and productivity through these interactions?

Anton Hendrianto, Head of Human Capital Strategy & Development, Bank Muamalat, cites a LinkedIn study in which CEOs in the US and Canada pinned their hopes on generative AI in bolstering their productivity by up to 45%.

The majority of them invest in technology, especially in generative AI, according to Anton, who also believes that the tech not only helps to enhance productivity and creativity, but also fosters innovation in a more disciplined manner.

“This is a really different world right now,” Anton said. “[But] if you know how to prompt questions that will generate so many insights … it will become easier.”

Innovations are becoming easier right now, with the support of Generative AI

“In the HR space, it’s very, very simple. For example, with what we are doing right now, we also injected AI in our chatbot for employees. So, it will be smarter compared to the traditional chatbot because they can analyze sentiments coming from employees,” Anton said.

Indrijati Rahayoe, Chief Human Resources & Community Investment Officer, Prudential Syariah, concurred.

“Generative AI chatbot can be augmented, so there is additional value from the previous chatbot [iterations] to get the feeling of people,” Indrijati said.

“A robot will answer your question, and also know the emotions of the people who ask the questions … We know that the easiest way of implementing generative AI, [is] in wellbeing.”

Indrijati also believes that Generative AI is a boon for the insurance industry.

“The biggest work of the insurance industry is, first, underwriting, and, second, paying out the claims that come from customers. Those two [areas] are where we need to implement generative AI heavily. Right now, we have 70% of our underwriting already automated. It's a standard.”

Identifying gaps, boosting performance

Rudy Manik, CHRO & Marketing, FWD Insurance, also sees the impact of Generative AI in improving business performance.

“I want to put it in a practical way … the key word is productivity,” Rudy said. “The data of the KPIs [key performance indicators] from the business side, all of the productivity data from sales, are combined with all of the data from HR.

“So, in my case, we encourage all of our leaders [to do] a coaching program – coaching for performance – then we put all of the transaction, all of the content that they committed on the coaching side, into the system itself. By the end of the month, we can take the data, and then you can study the data in some way.

It’s in examining these trends that leaders can identify performance gaps.

“If we can see the gaps, we can do something [about them]. HR [becomes] a key enabler for business,” Rudy said.

“The key point is using data analytics, specifically, using generative AI to make our life easier. And that will put more strategy at the heart of it.”

Overall, the panelists summarised how generative AI has the potential to impact the effectiveness of the HR function.
