Nissan Motor Co Ltd has an independent committee on governance that is likely to recommend against having the same chairman as Renault SA, according to media reports.

Renault and its largest shareholder French state are however rooting for Jean-Dominique Senard to also lead the Japanese company. In late January, Senard started in his role as the Chairman of Renault, the French automaker. Given that Renault has a 43 percent stake in Nissan’s board as well, Senard is expected to become the Chairman for the Japanese carmaker as well. However, Nissan holds only 15 percent, non-voting stake in the French firm.

Senard was appointed earlier this year after Carlos Ghosn’s resignation amid financial scandals in Japan. Ghosn was arrested in Japan in November 2018 while Senard was leading the tyre giant Michelin in his capacity as the CEO. As Ghosn awaited trial, Senard was appointed as the new Chairman of Renault while Thierry Bollore was appointed as the Chief Executive Officer.
