Riding on the back of new mobile technology, Singapore is betting big on 5G network and planning to get a cybersecurity crack team for their telecom industry before the rollout of their 5G network next year.

The Telecoms Cybersecurity Specialist team will have industry experts from the public sector; these experts will look for loopholes, way forward for the upcoming roll out and will also be responsible for testing the new tools.

“You need to think about cybersecurity from the get-go,” Minister for Communications and Information S Iswaran said to the media.

The Ministry of Communications and Information is also doubling down on efforts to build the digital talent pipeline and advocate for Singapore’s cyberspace interests globally.

Head of Cyber Security Agency of Singapore (CSA) David Koh has been appointed as Singapore’s first representative to an international platform on laws and responsible state behavior in cyberspace, with the 25-member United Nations Groups of Governmental Experts to start work in December.

CSA is upbeat about the project, and they are reaching out to 10,000 young people in the coming three years - starting from secondary school - to train them in cybersecurity skills and explore occupations in the industry.

The Infocomm and Media Development Authority (IMDA) and the Education Ministry will also enroll all upper-primary pupils in a 10-hour computational thinking and coding course, from next year on, with the program to be supplemented by an optional component in secondary school.
