The vision behind Golden Indonesia 2045

Earlier this week, the head of Indonesia's Ministry of Population and Family Development Yogyakarta Office, Iqbal Apriansyah, declared that youth would play a key role in realising the Golden Indonesia 2045 vision - a strategy first launched in 2019 to elevate Indonesia to a high-income developed country before its centenary of independence in 2045.
Golden Indonesia 2045 has been frequently cited in various public and private sector initiatives over the last few years, ranging from digital and technological developments, to infrastructure and education investments, healthcare and social security programmes, and sector-specific initiatives to boost various industries. What is the vision behind it? Here's a quick primer.
Indonesia seeks to become a global economy by 2045, with GDP of US$73 trillion and a per capita income equivalent to that of today's developed countries - between US$23,000-30,000. This aspiration calls for annual GDP growth of 7-8% that is sustainable and protects the country's natural resources, with a high increase in environmental quality and a massive decrease in greenhouse gas emissions.
The vision also encompasses a 40%-60% decrease in poverty and a further increase in Indonesia's human development index, which was last measured at 0.728 in 2023.
It includes eight agendas for advancing the country on multiple fronts: social, economic, and governance transformation, leadership stability and diplomatic resilience, socio-cultural and ecological resilience, equitable regional development, infrastructural development, and sustainable development.
