Over 20,500 job openings in Info and Communications sector: Singapore

More than 20,500 job opportunities, attachments and traineeships under the information and communications sector are currently available in Singapore. This comes after the Ministry of Manpower and Workforce Singapore managed to deploy about 16,200 job seekers into diverse jobs in May 2021.

The recent job openings figure is 20% more than in 2019. The Ministry of Manpower and Workforce Singapore collaborated with more than 240 companies and recruiting agencies to cater to the needs of job seekers according to their skill set. Apart from MOM and WSG's effort, the government also worked and pooled resources with a number of IT firms. The idea was to judiciously use artificial intelligence and other means to match job seekers' requirements with ideal career or job opportunity, for example- WSG’s MyCareersFuture jobs platform.

Speaking on the  jaw-dropping figures of  job openings, Manpower Minister Tan See Leng revealed that the availability of jobs is due to continued and collaborated efforts by companies and their network resources.

Apart from the government, recruitment agencies and companies, trade unions and chambers play a pivotal role in helping job seekers find a relevant job. The trade unions often aid and work alongside the government, filling the gaps between government and recruiters. Some trade unions are collaborating with the government and indulging in skill development training and business growth for the job seekers as well as companies.

WSG offered a helping hand through its volunteer career advisers initiative, which was launched in 2020. The initiative involves participants with massive network resources and expertise. The initiative majorly targets jobs in healthcare and retail sectors, but it plans on expanding services across diverse sectors.

Other groups and initiatives to help job seekers include, the Chinese Development Assistance Council, Yayasan Mendaki, the Singapore Indian Development Association and the Eurasian Association.

Addressing the issue of employment gap, the Minister for Communications and Information Josephine Teo mentioned the presence of international companies and training institutions in Singapore, which can enhance employability and fill the gaps.
